The Assam Agricultural University (AAU) located in Jorhat, Assam is the leading state agricultural university in the country, begging the “Sardar Patel Outstanding Institution Award” from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) in 2014. Its contributions in the field of teaching, research and extension have been recognized nationwide. Being the oldest state agricultural university in the North-eastern region, since its inception in 1969, this institution has contributed enormously towards the generation of quality human resources, advanced technologies for the stake holders in general but for the farming community in particular of the region. AAU in collaboration with the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India has established a centre for harnessing gene resources of the region.
The Department of Entomology at AAU is the epicentre of teaching research and extension of agricultural insect science and also devotes to work on veterinary and medically important insects so as to evolve management strategies. It also attempts to exploit the biodiversity from this mega-diversity zone for nation building. Currently, with a strength of 20 faculty members specializing in various fields, the department is a vibrant and dynamic place for researchers and students, and is committed to adapt new ideas and encourage collaborations with other researchers in the country and abroad. We realize that without embracing the new technologies such as molecular biology or biotechnology, insect science will stay behind the race. Therefore, this department has felt the need of the proposed national conference on “Molecular Insect Science” so that researchers from the North-East as well as outside the region can exchange ideas and develop collaborations to advance the entomological research.
