Jorhat is the district headquarter (26.75°N, 94.2°E, 116 MSL) and about 300 KM east of Guwahati, well connected by roads, railways and air from anywhere in the country. The city is tied to many historical events and considered as “intellectual capital” of the state for high literacy rate and presence of numbers of well-known educational and research institutions such as AAU, Tocklai Tea Research Centre, CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Rain Forest Research Institute and Central Muga Eri Research and Training Institute, Assam Women's University to name a few. The largest river island in the world, Majuli, is a famous heritage site to visit along with Kaziranga National Park. During February, Jorhat is a pleasant place with warm clothes.
