College of Community Science

Community Science is an interdisciplinary field of study having a scientific understanding of the community concerned  and to improve the quality of life of individuals, family and people at large.College of Community Science is a constituent college of Assam Agricultural University and the college came into existence in the year 1973. The  new college building with modern amenities are located within the the sprawling campus of  Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat.

 The college of Home Science has been rechristened as College of Community Science as there has been a Nation wise change of  Nomenclature as per 5th Dean's Committee recommendations to widen the scope for employability of the graduates. In addition, the education  makes  the students  capable in bringing positive impact on the community as a whole .It aims in promoting professional competence among students to meet challenges in life and  will enable the students to pursue higher studies or to  undertake gainful employment in various sectors . It has come a long way and fulfills the current and future needs of scientific education of both boys and girls .

The college of Community Science  offers specialized core courses  in five areas viz. Food science and Nutrition, Textile and Apparel Designing, Human Development and Family Studies, Family Resource Management and Consumer Science  and Extension Education  and Communication Management as per requirements of the revised curriculum formulated to keep pace with the advances in technology and changing needs of the society. These departments have made significant development through the major mandate of State Agricultural Universities, i.e Teaching, Research and Extension.

College of Community Science offers B.Sc (Hons) ,M.Sc and Ph.D programmes in all the disciplines with an intake capacity of  50, 41 and 22 respectively. The B.Sc (Hons) Community Science is a four year professional degree programme with three years course work and one year student READY(Rural Entrepreneurship Awareness Development Yojana) programme for ensuring employability and develop entrepreneurs. The striking feature of this programme was the introduction of Experiential Learning Programme (ELP)  to develop much needed skills and entrepreneurial mindset among the students, RAWEP( Rural Home Science Work Experience) programme  and In-Plant training/Industrial attachment .

A   Four Years Degree Programme on FOOD NUTRTION AND DIETETICS recommended by ICAR, New Delhi has been offered in the College from  the year 2019 with an  intake capacity  of 28 students.

The present faculty strength of this College is 38, out of which 21 are Professors and 17 are Assistant Professors. Twenty seven faculty members have enriched themselves with PhD degree. Faculty members are able to receive recognition at various National and International  forums.

  The college has now evolved into a premier institute in North Eastern region. A degree  of Community Science opens up career options in different fields such as Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of National Health Mission,Government and Non Government Organizations, schools and colleges, Food Industries, Hospitals, Textile and Fashion Industries Interior designing firms, Event Management, Ergonomics consultancy ,Communication Journalism, media organizations etc . After completion of the degree in Community Science, the students gain confidence in becoming successful entrepreneurs in various fields.
