Achivements
  • (i) Improved practices in jhum cultivation to minimize soil erosion, to convert jhumya to stable agriculture and to enhance the farm income was recommended for the Hills districts of Assam.
  • (ii) Contour strip cropping across the hill slopes is advocated for checking soil loss through run-off on the hill slopes. Guinea (Panicum maximum) and citronella (Cymbopagon wintaroanus) grown as strip cropping with the field crops in the inter space area was recommended for the Hills zone of Assam.
  • (iii) Potassium status in the soils of hills district of Assam, Karbi Anglong and topo-sequence variation of different forms of potash was evaluated and published.
  • (iv) Nutrient status of soils of citrus belt in the hills zone of Assam evaluated, Classification of healthy and poor gardens done and causes of citrus decline identified. The finding has been documented and published.
  • (v) Fertilizer management and time of application of fertilizers in sugarcane seed crop for producing good quality sugarcane seed has been evolved for the zone.
  • (vi) Integrated nutrient management practices for spring planted sugarcane crop has been developed and substitution of 25% of the recommended dose of fertilizer N by green manuring with dhaincha, addition of sugarcane trash compost and FYM each @ 5 t/ha and with or without biofertilizer, Azotobacter is prescribed.
  • (vii) Lime requirement for sugarcane crop for the zone is evaluated and advocated 35% of LR(2 t/ha) as optimum for the zone.
  • (viii) Organic package for nutrient management for organic cultivation of sugarcane crop including dhaincha (S. aculata) as green manure, application of sugarcane trash compost, rice straw and FYM @ 5 t/ha each, biofertilizer azotobacter and PSB and added with vermi-compost has been developed.
  • (ix) Value addition in sugarcane was achieved through production of liquid, powder and chocolate jaggery. The technology for short term preservation of cane juice has been developed. The technologies for manufacturing different value added product and marketing techniques has been evaluated and popularized among the cane growers of the region.
  • (x) Evolved double pan and triple pan furnace for cane juice boiling during juice processing and popularized for its increased efficiency with regard to saving time and fuel consumption and reducing drudgery of workers.
  • (xi) Low cost storage facility for storage of jaggery has been worked out. It is a structure made of bamboo with all the sides pasted with mud and keeping silica gel inside in a tray and placed 2 feet above ground level. The facility is advocated for short term storage of jaggery. .
  • (xii) Method for storage of harvested sugarcane for limited period before crushing has been evaluated. Pre-harvest spray of ZnSO4 @ 100 mg/l and sodium metasilicate (2%) (3 days prior to harvest), soil application of ZnSO4 @ 25 kg/ha and post- harvest spray of lauryl sulphate @ 12 mM (3.5 g/l), Na-metasilicate (1%) and formaldehyde (100 ppm) + staked in shed is found to facilitate storage of the harvested material up to 5 days without deterioration of the juice quality.
  • (xiii) Under the project on Post-Harvest loss funded by MoFPI, harvest and post-harvest losses of different crops and commodities in the zone has been worked out and report published and submitted to the Hon’ble House of Parliament.
