The Medical Unit, AAU is located inside the Assam Agricultural University Jorhat campus in a picturesque locality surrounded by green trees all around. Its primary role is to provide rapid definitive assessment, investigation and treatment for the emergency patients. Following treatment on the Medical Unit, patients requiring further inpatient specialist care may be referred to the care of an appropriate hospital.
The Medical Unit, AAU serves the Employees, Students and Workers of the AAU Headquarter in Jorhat. It is fully equipped with emergency medical treatment facilities and has efficient Doctors work alongside the Pharmacists, GNM Staff Nurses, Laboratory Technicians and other Paramedical Staffs to provide care to patients in the unit.
The current space of Medical Unit was allotted by the World Bank in 1972. Dr. N. M. Rafique, the first Medical Officer of Assam Agricultural University, with the help of Mr. Upen Baruah, the then architect appointed by the World Bank, convinced the Bank for the allotment of the space.
In 2001, the Revolving Fund of the Medical Unit was set up and a nominal service charge was introduced for the treatment of the outsiders. On 28th of May, 2012, the Dental OPD of Medical Unit, AAU, Jorhat was inaugurated by the Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of the Assam Agricultural University, Dr K M Bujarbaruah.
The role of the Medical Unit, AAU, Jorhat during the past forty years in extending health care services to thousands of needy patients is laudable. This unit arranges various immunization and health activities from time to time. Regular rounds of Pulse Polio Immunisation drives are arranged with the help of the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of Assam, which also administered the immunizations under the Universal Immunisation programme like OPV, DPT, DT, Penta valent vaccine, JE vaccine, etc. The Medical Unit also arranges health camps like Hepatitis B vaccine camp, Japanese Encephalitis vaccine camp, Blood Donation camp, etc. Currently, the following services are provided by the Medical Unit:
1. Medical and Dental OPD Services
2. Clinical Laboratory Services
3. Antiseptic Dressing Services
4. Medicine Dispensing Services providing all the First Aid and other essential medicines
5. Ambulance Services with Oxygen cylinders etc.
Laboratory services at Medical Unit, AAU, Jorhat provide service with a primary focus that 'Patients come First', reporting results that help provide answers for physicians and patients.
We the members of Medical Unit lab are committed to provide our patients the best clinical care by ensuring accurate and on time results using processes, methods and technology that are consistent with the best practises in the world. We strive for continuous quality improvement in all processes and services that support patient care. These are monitored by various Quality indicators that are reviewed regularly. We combine the efficiency of automation and Lean principles to simplify and streamline processes.
Under the welfare scheme of the University, Medical Unit, AAU provide 24 hour ambulance service for the students and employees of the University. The ambulance is fully equipped and are capable of beginning emergency care at the site of incident and through the journey to a hospital.
The process
When an emergency is reported, the call taker gathers the needed basic information and
dispatches appropriate services. Basic information obtained includes:
1. Where the call is placed from
2. The type of emergency
3. Number of people injured and the condition of the injured
4. The caller's name, contact number, and location guidance
Emergency help dispatched through this process is expected to reach the site of the
emergency in an average of 15 minutes. Pre-hospital care will be given to patients being
transported to the nearest hospital.
