About Assam Agricultural University

A Pioneer Institution in Agricultural Education, Research and Extension

Assam Agricultural University (AAU), established on 1 April 1969 under the Assam Agricultural University Act, 1968, is the first agricultural university in the North-Eastern Region of India. The historic foundation of agricultural research and education in the region traces back to the establishment of two rice research stations at Karimganj in 1913 and Titabor in 1923, and the subsequent founding of the Assam Agricultural College at Jorhat in 1948 under the vision of Bharat Ratna Late Gopinath Bordoloi.

Its principal objective is to produce globally competitive human resources in agriculture and allied sciences, undertake research in conventional and frontier areas for production optimization, and disseminate scientific technologies as a public good to empower food growers, farmers, and rural entrepreneurs while ensuring long-term environmental sustainability, equity, and food and nutritional security.

The agriculture sector of North-East India is vibrant and contributes immensely towards the region's overall economic development and the livelihood security of the farming community. Likewise, agriculture is the backbone of Assam's economy, as it remains a primary source of livelihood, food security, and rural employment for a large section of the population. Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, being a premier institute of North-East India primarily focused on achieving excellence in agricultural education, research and extension, has remained steadfast in its commitment towards advancing agricultural science, developing competent human resources and improving the livelihoods of farming communities across Assam, apart from fulfilling the national and international perspectives since inception.

Assam Agricultural University provides ample opportunities to build the future and career of its students. The University has two core constituent faculties—the Faculty of Agriculture and the Faculty of Community Science—under which six constituent colleges impart quality education, hands-on field experiments, and leadership training.

Pioneering Frontier Agricultural Science Across 6 Agro-Climatic Zones

Agriculture in Assam is a vital economic driver contributing nearly 19% to the state's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and engaging about 70% of the population. The research mandate of AAU is carried out through six Regional Agricultural Research Stations (RARS) representing the distinct agro-climatic zones of Assam, alongside five specialized Commodity Research Stations (CRS) for Rice, Sugarcane, Citrus, Horticulture, and Sericulture.

With over 150 research projects including All India Coordinated Research Projects (AICRP/AINP) and international research partnerships (NIBIO, UN-World Food Programme, GIZ), AAU jointly publishes authoritative Package of Practices (PoP) with the Govt. of Assam to advance sustainable crop productivity.

Assam Agricultural University caters directly to the farming community of the North Eastern Region, playing a vital role in rural socio-economic upliftment. The Directorate of Extension Education maintains seamless liaisons with the Department of Agriculture, Govt. of Assam, alongside allied line departments including Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Fishery, and Sericulture.

Through its statewide network of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs), the Agricultural Technology Information Centre (ATIC), and the Extension Education Institute (EEI), AAU delivers on-farm testing, frontline demonstrations, low-cost technologies for resource-poor farmers, and regular advisory services that have dramatically boosted adoption of high-yielding varieties across Assam.

Founded in 1969 at the university's headquarters in Jorhat, the library is the central knowledge reservoir catering to educators, scholars, researchers, and students across agricultural sciences, sericulture, community science, and horticulture.

Online Exam Center

Situated on the 3rd floor of Rev. B. M. Pugh Library, this state-of-the-art facility features 150 networked terminals with high-speed connectivity to conduct continuous academic assessments, CET entrance exams, and competitive evaluations.

Language Lab

A modern digital multimedia facility built to hone students' communicative proficiency, linguistic fluency, presentation abilities, and technical scientific writing for global academic and corporate competitiveness.

Campus Medical Unit

Providing dedicated healthcare and wellness services, staffed by qualified medical officers and paramedics, offering round-the-clock emergency assistance, outpatient care, routine health screenings, and ambulance services.
