College of Horticulture and Farming System Research

Assam with diverse agro-ecological situations within each agro-climatic zone, provides ample opportunities for a variety of horticulture crops. Sustainable technology and crop management had been important aspects that were focused during the 11^th Five Year Plan period for crop productivity enhancement and value addition. Horticulture, in the coming years, is presumed to play a vital role in strengthening the economy through employment generation, crop diversification, product quality and nutritional security. In next few decades, substantial growth in the demand for horticulture products will urge the need for newer technology and precision management practices under the scenario of ever shrinking land resources and shortage of skilled people. The initiative to set up a college is thus necessity of the hour to timely strengthen human resources in the field of horticulture. 

The college was functioning from the AAU headquarters, Jorhat, since 2014 to February 2023. On 6^th December 2022, the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the new college campus in Lakhopur, Nalbari, in presence of Hon’ble Finance minister of Assam Mrs. Ajanta Neog, Hon'ble Minister of Environment and Forest, Mr. Chandra Mohan Patowary, Hon'ble Minister of Public Health Engineering, Mr. Jayanta Malla Baruah, Hon'ble Minister of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs of Assam, Mr. Ranjeet Kumar Dass and Hon'ble Vice Chancellor of Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat, Dr. Bidyut Chandan Deka. On 1^st March 2023, the college was shifted to its own campus at Lakhopur, Nalbari.

1) Develop the College into a Centre of Excellence in Education and Research in North East India by exploring new frontiers of science and knowledge

2) To generate Human Resources for providing leadership in technology development and guidance to the farming community for ushering in a vibrant, responsive and resilient agriculture.

1) To provide innovative teaching, research, training and demonstration in all the areas of horticultural science viz. fruit science, vegetable science, floriculture and landscaping, plantation crops, spices, medicinal and aromatic plant divisions

2) Provide quality education to impart professionalism and scientific acumen.

3) To generate technologies for improving production and productivity of horticultural crops

The specific objectives of the UG degree programme of CHFSR, Nalbari are depicted below:

1) To develop efficient and skilled human resources in areas of Horticulture science

2) To furtherance basic strategic, applied and anticipatory research coupled with efficient technology delivery system in Horticulture

3) To tackle the issues for addressing the problems associated with production, protection and post-harvest management of horticultural commodities

4) Systematic studies for conservation and bioprospecting with indigenous genetic resources of Horticultural crops

5) To establish GI and IPR for the bio-assets in Horticulture in the region

CHFSR, Nalbari presently offers only Undergraduate (UG) degree programme in Horticulture, however, initiatives have already been taken for starting PG courses in the college soon. The course syllabi of undergraduate programme have been regularly revised and updated as per report of various Deans’ Committees formed time to time and as per ICAR norms.
