The Directorate of Post-Graduate Studies was established as per the Act and Statutes of the Assam Agricultural University Act, 1968 vide clause 27.(1). As per provision of the Act, the Director of Post-Graduate Studies, AAU is the Statutory Officer responsible for the supervision, academic coordination, and evaluation of all Master's and Doctoral programmes.
The Directorate started functioning at AAU Khanapara on 11.02.1980 under the leadership of Dr. P.K. Sharma, the first Director of Post-Graduate Studies. In October 1985, the main Directorate shifted to the AAU Headquarters at Jorhat. Today, while operating primarily from Jorhat, it maintains a liaison office at the College of Veterinary Science campus, Khanapara, Guwahati.

To co-ordinate post-graduate studies across all constituent Colleges, Departments, and academic sections of Assam Agricultural University, ensuring standardized course curricula, credit hours, and examination standards aligned with ICAR 5th Deans' Committee norms.
To effect general co-ordination of post-graduate Thesis and dissertation research programmes with the ongoing research priorities and regional field problem-solving services of the University Research Directorates.
To supervise the systematic maintenance of official records pertaining to PG courses, advisory committees, synopses, comprehensive qualifying examinations, thesis evaluation, and student welfare across all postgraduate campuses.
