The
Department of Silk Product Science came into existence since the commencement
of the College of Sericulture i.e. 9 February 2014 with the mandate of
undergraduate teaching. Silk is a fine, strong, soft, shining, natural protein
fibre composed mainly of fibroin produced by
certain insect larvae to form cocoons. These silk fibres are
converted into silk yarn which then woven on looms into silk cloth by the
weavers. The silk fibre obtained from the silkworm cocoon has to be processed
further in order to get the silk fabric. The Department of Silk Product Science
imparts knowledge to the sericulture students starting from history and classification
of fibres and yarn to physical and chemical properties of cocoon and fibres. It
also deals with the pre and post reeling and spinning operation with different types
of reeling and spinning machines for production of fibres. Besides it also
deals with the silk reeling and spun silk industry, their marketing
strategies and preparation of project proposal in sericulture. Use of dyes,
weaving, textile designing, blending are also used in designing and finishing
of a fabric. Besides it also deals with the utilisation of different
sericultural resources to value added products. Thus it helps in preparing the students for self awareness
in various reeling and spinning sector in sericulture.
