The Department of Cocoon Crop Production, College of Sericulture came into existence since the commencement of the college i.e. 9 February 2014 with the mandate of undergraduate teaching on producing commercially good quality cocoons. Historical evidence shows that silk was discovered in China and that the industry spread from there to other parts of the world and ultimately to India and its different parts. The sericulture is conducted by farmers for the purpose of gaining their income. High profit is the ultimate aim of farmers to take up any cash crop. In sericulture, this can be achieved by producing as many cocoons as possible of good quality from a unit of silkworm cocoon production technology. Factors contributing to the degree of success of crop and extent of profit are use of leaf in time, healthy and hygienic rearing must be carried out by providing optimum conditions and quality leaves, brushing silkworm eggs in relation to leaf availability, proper (scientific) rearing management, rearing facilities and the race of silkworm reared should be superior and spin commercially good quality cocoons.
