Textiles and Apparel Designing constitute one of the
five departments within the Faculty of Community Science at AAU, Jorhat-13,
established in 1973. This department has evolved into a comprehensive academic
unit, offering Undergraduate, Postgraduate, and PhD programs since 1973, 1988,
and 2010, respectively. Originally named Clothing and Textiles, it underwent a
nomenclature change to Textiles and Apparel Designing in 2012, following the
recommendation of the Fourth Dean\'s Committee.
The department provides nationally designed courses
aimed at imparting knowledge, skills, and guided research in the domains of
textiles and apparel designing across various academic levels. These programs
are structured to enable students to evolve into critical thinkers with the
capacity to employ scientific methods in the cost-effective development of
products that meet both aesthetic and functional requirements.
The department has been at the forefront of
innovative research, exploring a diverse range of topics such as dyes, novel
fibers, various finishes, Textile and apparel designing, and other cutting-edge
investigations. This commitment to research extends beyond traditional areas,
encompassing a broad spectrum of emerging fields and contributing to the
advancement of knowledge in textiles and apparel design.
Mission
The Department of Textiles and Apparel Designing at
AAU, Jorhat-13, is guided by a set of visionary missions aimed at providing
comprehensive professional education and fostering holistic development among
graduates and postgraduates. Our mission encompasses the following key
objectives:

To deliver professional education that
spans the entire spectrum of activities in garment construction, fashion, and
textiles. Our focus is on nurturing graduates and postgraduates with a global
outlook, instilling in them a sense of social responsibility, fostering
creativity, and promoting critical thinking.

To equip students with advanced
knowledge that aligns with the latest changing trends in the dynamic fields of
garment construction, fashion, and textiles. We strive to ensure that our
graduates stay abreast of evolving industry requirements.

To cultivate graduates who are not only
knowledgeable but also creative and innovative. We aim to excel in fashion and
textile education and research, empowering our graduates to make significant
contributions in various fields related to textiles.

To develop a dynamic department by
expanding our extension activities. We seek to create awareness among diverse
groups of people, motivating them to become self-empowered individuals capable
of contributing to the growth of the textile and apparel industry.

To revive and preserve different
textiles, including woven motifs and designs, of Assam and the North East
region through dedicated research, training, and product development. This
initiative serves the dual purpose of heritage conservation and the economic
upliftment of the society.
Through the pursuit of these missions, the Department of Textiles and
Apparel Designing strives to be a beacon of excellence, producing graduates who
are not only academically proficient but also socially responsible and poised
to make meaningful contributions to the textile and apparel landscape.
Vision
In
accordance with the Mission, the Department of Textiles and Apparel Designing
at the Faculty of Community Science, AAU, Jorhat, envisions the creation of a
highly skilled manpower base. Our vision is centered on providing individuals
with the utmost academic knowledge, practical learning, and performance skills.
This prepares them to serve in diverse areas, spanning from expertise in
natural fibers and dyes to the intricacies of apparel designing and
construction. Our overarching goal is to ensure optimal utilization of natural
resources, contributing to the economic upliftment of farm families.
Furthermore, the department aspires to foster the development of entrepreneurs specializing in apparel designing. We aim to cultivate a new wave of professionals dedicated to creating eco-friendly and user-friendly textile materials for both household and industrial applications. Through these initiatives, our vision is to be a catalyst for positive change, making significant contributions to sustainable practices, economic development, and the overall well-being of communities.
