Historical background
The Department of Poultry Science was established in the year 1986 with 8 teaching staff, inclusive of a farm manager. It started M.V.Sc. study programme in the year 1993 and PhD programme in 2000. Initially, this department was located near College Canteen sharing the building with Gymnasium hall and Students Union hall. Later, the Department was shifted to its final location at the Main building, Faculty of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara in the year 1989. So far this Department has produced 46 numbers of M.V.Sc and 11 PhD students. At present, the Department has only 3 teaching staff inclusive of a Poultry Farm Manager.
OBJECTIVES
1. To impart teaching for the development of human resources that include Undergraduate, Masters and PhD degree programme.
2. To conduct various basic and applied research on different poultry species or their products under Masters and Doctoral degree programme.
3. To carry out different collaborative research works involving various funding agencies.
4. To impart various classes/training programs for the UG and PG students and for the entrepreneurs/farmers at the Instructional Poultry Farm Complex.
5. To render different extension training programmes transferring poultry technologies to the end users at the field.

Poultry Symposium: Opportunities for budding veterinarians “Pipping 2019”
The College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara organized a Poultry Symposium: Opportunities for budding veterinarians as “Pipping 2019” on July 27, 2019. Industry experts and academicians from different platforms deliberated brainstorming sessions under the Department of Poultry Science. The symposium was held targeting young minds with the aim to motivate them towards the poultry sector and entrepreneurship development. Altogether 95 students showed up for this event. Professor Dr. Deben Sapcota, Head of the Department of Poultry Science, briefed the objective of the symposium which was held at the College auditorium. Dr. B.N. Saikia, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science, exhorted the students to take up the profession sincerely. Dr. N.Kalita, the Director of Research (Vety) encouraged the students towards the poultry profession since there are ample scopes and opportunities in this sector. Speaking on the topic “ Academia to Poultry: the world of opportunities knocking on the door”, Professor P.K Shukla, Register, and Dean, Post Graduate Studies, Mathura Veterinary University explained the future prospects of veterinarians. Dr. Harekrishna Deka, Managing Trustee, NSPDT, and an alumnus of this college briefed on Community Poultry Farming: a unique example of Social Enterprising in India. Other experts namely, Dr. Anjan Goswami, Director, RJ. Group, Bengaluru, Dr. Jeetendra Verma, RM, South Central Asia Delcon, Bengaluru, Dr. Sachin Ingawar, Com. Director, Indian Subcontinent Adisseo, Mumbai, Dr. Shirish Nigam, MD, EW Nutrition, South Asia who came all the way to deliver their lectures and have graced the occasion. An open discussion was also held between the Guest Lecturers, Entrepreneurs, and the students. Dr. Pankaj Lal Gogoi, DR. Pranjit Koch, Dr. Hemen Bharali, Dr. Mridul Kr. Borah, Dr. Khirode Saikia, and Dr. Khanjit Medhi were some of the well-known entrepreneurs of Assam and Alumni of the College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara, and have been invited to share their success stories. All the attendees and delegates actively participated in the interactive session. The symposium concluded with a plenary session and a vote of thanks. Organizing Secretary-cum-Prof. and Head, Department of Poultry Science appreciated the whole-hearted support received from College authorities, Poultry Industry, and others in conducting the event with grand success. Students witnessing the event bestow with appreciation. They were highly motivated towards this poultry sector and were also highlighted with the ample opportunities and scopes associated with this industry. As aimed the budding minds were encouraged and are hopeful to attend more such events in near future.

Entrepreneurship training under NAHEP on poultry husbandry and meat processing
On 9th October WORLD EGG DAY 2020 was celebrated with the trainee student, JRF, Research Scholar, Dean, DR, HOD of PSc Dept. and All the teachers of PSc dept. The programme comprises of Speech from respected Dean, DR, HOD of PSc Dept., on benefits of eating Egg and its nutritional contents, Egg Slogan from students and Egg dish competition. The students were appreciated by awarding 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize along with a certificate.

October a Skill
Development Training Under NAHEP on “Poultry Husbandary and Meat processing”
was conducted with 9 nos. of student (4th year) by Department of
Poultry science, College of veterinary science, AAU, Khanapara, under Training
Coordinator- Dr Reema Saikia, by maintaining Safety protocol to prevent
COVID-19. The training was inaugurated by Dean, FVSc. and NAHEP manual was distributed
among the stuents. The Student found the training to be beneficial as spoken by
few of the trainees on the closing day of the training (12-08-20).

August a Skill Development Training Under
NAHEP on “Poultry Husbandary and Meat processing” was conducted with
11 nos. of student (Internee and local resident of Guwahati) by Department of Poultry
science, College of veterinary science, AAU, Khanapara, under Training
Coordinator- Dr Reema Saikia, by maintaining Social distance. The training was
inaugurated by Dean, FVSc. and NAHEP
manual was distributed to all the students. The Student found the training to
be beneficial as spoken by few of the trainees on the closing day of the
training (13-08-20).
On 22nd June a Skill Development Training Under NAHEP on “Poultry Husbandary and Meat processing” was conducted with 12 nos. of student (Internee and local resident of Guwahati) by Department of Poultry science, College of veterinary science, AAU, Khanapara, under Training Coordinator- Dr Reema Saikia, by maintaining Social distance. The training was inaugurated by Dean, FVSc. and NAHEP manual was released on 22nd June 2020. The Student found the training to be beneficial as spoken by few of the trainees on the closing day of the training (28-06-20).

An Interview on “Banijyik Bhittit Thalua Kukura Palonor Diha”by Prasar Bharati, was aired on All India Radio: Dibrugarh with Dr. Reema Saikia, Asst Professor, Department of Poultry Science, College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University on 14th November, 2020 at 6:15pm. During the talk show, she elaborated about the commercial rearing of local breeds of chicken and their management under rural condition.
The College of Veterinary
Science, AAU, Khanapara organized a two-day Broad Subject Matter Area (BSMA)
workshop on Livestock Products and Production Management on Oct 9-10/2018. Altogether
52 academic experts from 14 different State Agricultural/Veterinary
Universities, National Institutes like NDRI, Karnal, IVRI, Izatnagar, CARI,
Bareilly including from the host institute deliberated brain storming sessions
which ran simultaneously in 5 departments for the subjects viz. Livestock
Production Management, Animal Genetics and Breeding, Animal Nutrition,
Livestock Products Technology and Poultry Science. The inaugural session was
started with lighting of lamp by the dignitaries. Speaking on the occasion, Dr.
S.P. Tiwari, Chairman, BSMA appreciated the help and support received from Dr.
K.M. Bujarbaruah, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, AAU in holding the event. Dr. A.K.
Pattnaik, Convenor, briefed the genesis and history of the workshop. Dr. B.N.
Saikia, Dean, FVSc, welcomed the guests and appreciated the initiative of ICAR,
New Delhi in taking up the revision of PG syllabus which will have far reaching
effect on the quality of education. Dr. B. Sharma, Joint Registrar (Acad)
expected good deliberation during the workshop from the learned academia. The
delegates actively participated in the event. The workshop concluded with a
plenary session at 5.30 pm on Oct 10. Offering a vote of thanks, Dr. D.
Sapcota, Organizing Secretary cum Prof and Head, Department of Poultry Science
appreciated the whole-hearted support received from AAU authorities, ICAR and
others in conducting the event with grand success.
A Skill Development Training Programme on Quail Production Technology was organised at IPF, CVSc, AAU, Khanapara dated 23rd to 25th August, 2018. The meeting was inaugurated by Dean FVSc. and on the last day of the training, certificates were awarded to all the trainees.
A Skill Development Training Programme on Poultry Production Technology was organised at IPF, CVSc, AAU, Khanapara dated 1st to 7th October 2018 participated by 12 number of participants. The meeting was inaugurated by Dean FVSc. and on the last day of the training, certificates were awarded to all the trainees.
A Farmers training was organised at IPF, CVSc, AAU, Khanapara dated 3rd to 9th January 2019. The programme was based on poultry product technology which was participated by 13 trainees from different districts of Assam. On the last day of the training, certificates were awarded to all the trainees by Dean FVSc.
A Training Programme on Skill Development for Poultry Production Technology was organised at IPF, CVSc, AAU, Khanapara dated 28th March to 3rd April 2019 and attended by 10 participants. On the last day of the training, certificates were awarded to all the trainees by Dean FVSc.
A 6 days Skill Development Training Programme on Poultry Production Technology was held from 10th-16th September, 2019 at Instructional Poultry Farm, College of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara. The programme was inaugurated by Dean, CVSc. AAU and attended by 19 number of trainees. The training included both theory and practical demonstration of poultry rearing and management, poultry processing and poultry product preparation. All the trainees were given hands on experience of different procedures and were also given certificate.
