Genesis
The department came into being as Zoology and Entomology with the establishment of the erstwhile Assam Agricultural College (presently College of Agriculture) in 1948, initially to teach B.Sc. (Agri.) students. Prof. Md. Sharifullah (October 1, 1925 – February 3, 1988) was the founder Head of the Department (HoD) who had continued for long 37 years and was the pioneer in spreading knowledge of insect science through teaching and research in this part of the country. The Department started offering Postgraduate Programme to award M.Sc. (Agri.) since 1966 and three years after bifurcation and establishment of the Assam Agricultural University, subsequently M. Sc. and Ph. D. Programme were introduced under course credit system. Since then it has become one of the major disciplines engaged not only in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate programmes but also involved in research activities with six national co-ordinated projects and a host of externally funded ad-hoc projects. The department has contributed towards dissemination of technologies by imparting trainings to various stakeholders including farmers, extension functionaries, Self Help Groups, etc. of the North East (NE) region and presently offers certificate course on apiculture and biological control to the unemployed youths as well. The department has also given birth to the Fishery Research Centre, Department of Nematology and Department of Sericulture at Jorhat campus sharing not only its physical resources but also its manpower. Since 1948, 14 professors have been the Head of the Department. Currently the department is having 19 faculty members.
