The Department
Since the establishment of erstwhile
Assam Agricultural College (AAC), Govt. of Assam on August 16, 1948, the
courses under Plant Pathology were offered under the Department of Agricultural
Botany and Plant Pathology. Later, after the establishment of Assam
Agricultural University (AAU) on April 01,1969 under the ‘Assam Agricultural
University Act, 1968’ with AAC as a constituent college, the department of
Plant Pathology was bifurcated from the mother department in 1981. The M.Sc.
programme in the department was started before the bifurcation in 1966 and subsequently Ph.D. programme under course credit system was started in 1986.
Under the able leadership of many dedicated
teachers as the Heads of Department, active support from the university and
full cooperation from all faculties, the department has developed into one of
the best departments in the university
at present with modern teaching
and research facilities.
Vision
Development of
science and plant health management ready human resources and to conduct
research aimed at protecting and preserving plant health for continued
production of food grains embracing newer means and methods to generate sound
plant health management technologies.
Mission
To preposition the
Department of Plant Pathology as a sought after teaching and research hub
injecting the needed growth, promoting factors in terms of infrastructure,
equipments and research portfolios.
Objective
•To strengthen the
department both in terms of infrastructure and manpower in order to develop it
into a center of excellence in education, research and extension of Plant
Pathology

microbial population in relation to shift in plant disease spectrum in the
region
•Molecular diagnosis
of major plant diseases causing organisms and beneficial flora of the region
•Need-based research
on biological management of plant diseases and systemic disease resistance
•To establish a
nanotechnology research unit at the department of Plant Pathology in
collaboration with other departments
•Create more awareness
on technologies developed in the Department through OFTs, FLDs, Farmers
trainings and advisory services
•Develop skills on
Plant Pathological techniques amongst entrepreneurs/SHGs associated with
farming through training and advise
