Indian council of Agricultural research-All India Coordinated Research Project (ICAR-AICRP) on Goat Improvement (Assam Hill Goat Field Unit) was implemented at AAU-Goat Research Station, Burnihat, Kamrup (M), Assam, under the Directorate of Research (Veterinary.) on 01.04.2009.
Assam Hill Goats are known for its productive and reproductive traits. The age at first service, age at first kidding, kidding interval, and service period was recorded as 244.25 ± 11.80 days, 304.12 ± 8.33 days, 242.42 ± 0.53 days and 97.12 ± 6.13 days respectively. The average birth weight was as 1.23 ± 0.04 Kg. and weight at three, six, nine and twelve month of age was 4.90 ± 0.03, 7.46 ± 0.05, 10.11 ± 0.09 and 13.13 ± 0.12 Kg respectively. The breed is mainly maintained for meat purpose due to its high quality and good flavor.
Objectives:
1. To assess the production performance of goat breeds in farmer’s flocks under village management system and improve the germplasm through selection.
2. To evaluate the socio-economic status of goat breeders and the economics of goat production in farmer’s flock.
3. To disseminate the pro-poor goat based technologies under field conditions and assessment of their impact on goat production.
Income per family / annum is increased from Rs. 1,223.00 (2009-10) to Rs.12, 788.60 (2022-23).
