Assam Agricultural University (AAU), Jorhat, has received the prestigious State NSS Award 2024–25 in the Best University category, earning state-wide recognition for its remarkable contribution to community service, social welfare, and nation-building activities carried out through the National Service Scheme (NSS).
Hon’ble Sports and Youth Welfare Minister, Shri Biswajit Daimari, presented the award at a grand ceremony held at the Arjun Bhogeswar Baruah Complex in Guwahati on September 3 during the official State Sports Day celebrations.
The State NSS Award 2024–25 recognises Assam Agricultural University’s stellar contribution to social welfare and community-oriented activities steered under its vibrant NSS Cell.
The university’s dedicated NSS volunteers and programme officers across constituent colleges have actively taken part in numerous high-impact activities that promote civic responsibility and public welfare. These initiatives encompass grassroots community service drives, rural health camps, environmental protection and afforestation campaigns, disaster relief, blood donation drives, and diverse outreach endeavours that directly support nation-building.
The award further acknowledges the pivotal role of Assam Agricultural University in creating structured opportunities for students to contribute constructively to society beyond standard academic curricula. Through the National Service Scheme, students engage directly with farming communities and rural populations, gaining first-hand experience in tackling socio-economic and environmental challenges while establishing AAU as a front-runner in the state’s NSS movement.
Dr. Binoy Kumar Medhi, Director of Students’ Welfare-cum-NSS Programme Coordinator at Assam Agricultural University, received the prestigious honour on behalf of the university fraternity.
As Director of Students’ Welfare and NSS Programme Coordinator, Dr. Medhi has played an exemplary role in steering and coordinating the strategic activities of the university’s NSS Cell. Under his guidance, the cell has substantially broadened its footprint, mobilizing faculty programme officers and hundreds of student volunteers across agricultural, veterinary, fishery, community science, and sericulture colleges.
The State NSS honour recognizes Dr. Medhi’s sustained leadership and collaborative coordination. AAU stated that this milestone reflects the collective dedication of its entire NSS fraternity—including programme officers, volunteer coordinators, and students—working cohesively to reinforce the university's social outreach mandate.
Adding double pride to the occasion, Assam Agricultural University celebrated another standout laurel at the state ceremony.
Ayushman Boruah, a 4th-year undergraduate student of the College of Agriculture, AAU, Jorhat, received the coveted State NSS Award 2024–25 in the NSS Volunteer Category. The accolade recognizes his exceptional frontline leadership, volunteer spirit, and enthusiastic involvement in grassroots NSS missions.
The dual honours garnered by the university and its student reflect the depth of AAU’s social commitment. While the Best University title celebrates institutional vision and collective impact, the NSS Volunteer Award underscores individual excellence and civic dedication among the student body.
The National Service Scheme plays an essential role in encouraging students to engage actively with communities and undertake constructive social welfare tasks. NSS programmes nurture empathy, moral values, and civic duty while addressing societal needs. At AAU, student volunteers gain hands-on experiential learning outside traditional classrooms—learning teamwork, crisis management, leadership, and the noble creed of "Not Me, But You".
This state-level honour is set to inspire greater student engagement in NSS and community welfare initiatives. Recognition of this stature validates the hard work of ongoing volunteers while encouraging new batches to take up impactful outreach programs. Assam Agricultural University remains steadfast in advancing values of nation-building, youth empowerment, and service to society alongside academic excellence.
