Dr. Bidyut Chandan Deka, born on September 01, 1964 is an eminent Agricultural Scientist, Academic leader, innovator and expert in post harvest technology of Horticultural crops, joined Assam Agricultural University as its Vice Chancellor in October 22, 2020 and continued till March 13, 2026. He obtained his Ph.D from Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi and MSc (Agri) & BSc (Agri) from Assam Agricultural University. He began his academic career as a faculty at AAU and later joined ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region as Principal Scientist in March 28, 2007. He subsequently served as Joint Director, ICAR Research Complex, Nagaland centre and Director, ICAR-ATARI, Umiam before assuming ac Vice Chancellor.

Dr. Deka has made significant contributions in crop conservation, varietal development, post harvest technology, packaging innovation, integrated farming system research and climate resilient agriculture. During his career he published 145 research papers, 6 books, contributed 20 book chapters and more than 100 research & extension bulletins and popular articles. He supervised 6 M.Sc, 4 doctoral scholars and guided more than 100 scientists for innovation led research. Dr. Deka in his close circuit is known as result oriented task master.

For his contribution Dr. Deka was awarded with ICAR Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Award, Dr. D.N. Borthakur Award, Horticulture Leadership Awards, Dr. J.C. Anand Memorial Award, J.S. Pruthi Memorial Award, K.U. Patel Memorial Awards besides many others. Dr. Deka participated/ represented India in high level R&D discussions in countries like New Zealand, Swizerlands, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Singapore etc during his career. Besides being member of several high level national and regional committees under ICAR and other organizations Dr. Deka is serving/ served as the Chairman of Research Advisory Committee of Central Institute of Temperate Horticulture, Cental Muga-Eri Research & Training Institute, National Research Centre on Litchi and National Research Centre on Grape.

During his tenure As Vice Chancellor AAU witnessed remarkable institutional transformation including improvement in NIRF ranking, digital governance initiative, entrepreneurship development, technology commercialization and ODL (Open and Distance Learning) programme. Dr. Deka continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening agricultural education, research and innovation in India, particularly in North Eastern Region of the country.
