The Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dhemaji, Simen Chapori under Assam Agricultural University (AAU) was established through a MoU between ICAR and AAU, Jorhat. It was sanctioned by the ICAR during the year 2005 and started functioning at Silapathar (Dhemaji) initially during 2008. Now the present office is located at Simen Chapori i.e around 25 kms from Silapathar. Dhemaji KVK is an integral part of the frontline extension system of AAU. It is also known as the “Farm Science Centre” for the entire district consisting of multi-disciplinary scientist’s viz. crop science, plant protection, horticulture, animal science, community science etc. KVK Dhemaji is situated at eastern most corner of Assam and on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra.
KVK, Dhemaji has been phenomenal in performing various mandated activities like OFT, FLD, Trainings etc. round the year. Apart from this, it is actively involved in various extension activities of ICAR, line departments and flagship programmes of GoI. Dhemaji KVK is also engaged in capacity building, livelihood promotion and vocational trainings on various topics for the benefit of the farming community.

How to reach Dhemaji:
Dhemaji is well connected with other important hubs of Assam via road, rail and by air. Two domestic airports, Lilabari and Dibrugarh airports, lie near Dhemaji at distances of 68 Km and 75 Km respectively. The national highways are in great condition in this part of the state with the now functioning Bogibeel bridge connecting Dhemaji to Dibrugarh via a much faster route.
1. By flight: The nearest airport to Dhemaji is the Lilabari Airport servicing North Lakhimpur, lying at a distance of around 68 Kms. Another major domestic airport is the Dibrugarh airport which lies at a distance of about 75 Kms from the city.
2. By Road: With a well-developed network of road sprawling through the town, Dhemaji is easily accessible by some cities through roads. With NH52 passing right through the territory of the District. Many private taxi services and a few private and state buses run down to Dhemaji from some nearby areas, including Jorhat and Dibrugarh.
3. By Train: Dhemaji is serviced by the Dhemaji Railway Station. A few major trains, like the Rajdhani Express, runs from the main cities like New Delhi to Dibrugarh Railway Station, Assam, thus providing decent connectivity to Dhemaji even from far off areas.
4. By Waterways:
Ferry service available from Dibrugarh through Dibru Sonari Burisuti, Dibru Sissi Machkhowa, Dibru Majarbari and Bogibeel Kareng Ghats. Ferries ply every hourly from 7:40 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. from Karengghat and every hourly from 8:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. from Bogibeel side.
1. A total of 38 numbers of proven technologies were demonstrated as FLDs covering 228 numbers of farmers at different locations across the district for horizontal spread of respective technology.
2. Six (6) different technologies of Oilseed and Pulses covering 140 ha area (Blackgram- 20 ha; Sesamum- 20 ha; Toria- 60 ha; Field pea- 10 ha; Lentil- 20 ha; Lathyrus- 10 ha) were demonstrated as CFLD with participation of 350 farmers for large scale demonstration of the respective technology.
3. A total of 12 numbers of Rice technologies were demonstrated under APART project covering 81 ha area and 257 farmers at different locations across the district.
4. Five (5) numbers of climate resilient technologies were demonstrated under NICRA at Magurmari village adopted under the NICRA project.
Under On farm testing (OFT) programme following new technologies have been tested by the Subject Matter Specialists of respective discipline to observe the feasibility and economic viability in the district addressing the specific problem. The following are the OFTs conducted during 2022-23:
1. Assessment of KSB in reduction of Potassic Fertilizers on Sali paddy.
2. Fertilizer prescription equation for targeted yield of winter Rice Sub 1.
3. Management of Rice Hispa in Sali Paddy cultivation.
4. Validation of ITK to control insect pests in Brinjal by spraying cow urine mixed with tobacco-soaked water.
5. Management of Fall Army Worm in Maize.
6. Introduction of Azolla as dietary supplement to poultry for assessing the performance.
7. Assessment of upgraded goat (Beetal cross) under agroclimatic condition of Dhemaji district.
8. Assessment of biofortified sweet potato Bhu sonaand Bhu Krishna with Dergaon Red under Dhemaji condition.
9. Organic cultivation of Brocolli.
10. Assessment of French bean variety Arka Komal and Arka Sukomal.
11. Validation of Trimming of branches in Pumpkin.
12. Cultivation of Ridge gourd using organic sources of nutrients.
13. Assessment of Improved moisture stress tolerant variety in Indian mustard through mutation breeding.
14. Assessment of newly developed Yellow Sarson line AAU JYS-14-2 in Dhemaji district.
15. Assessment of DWR based cropping sequence in Dhemaji district.
16. Assessment of Soybean-Maize cropping sequence in upland situation of Dhemaji district: An OFT on cropping sequence of Soybeam -Maize was done in three locations of Dhemaji district (Kemi Jelam, Purana Jelam and Jonai).
17. Assessment of field pea variety SPC-101 and HFP-715 in rice-pulse (field pea) double cropping sequence under medium land situation of Dhemaji district.
During 2022-23, a total of 82 nos. of training programmes were conducted by KVK Dhemaji. The total number of participants was 1860 comprising 1357 farmers and 503 of farm women. Out of the total participants, around 58.30 % were from SC/ST communities and 41.7 % were from other communities of the district.

Students under the RAWEP were alloted to KVK, Dhemaji during 2022-23 and the programme started during February’ 2023. There were 36 nos. of students under the faculty of Agriculture from different colleges of Agriculture under AAU, Jorhat. One village namely Joriguri was alloted towards work experience of the students.
On July 16, 2022 during the 94th foundation day of the ICAR, some prestigious awards to ICAR institution, research organizations, scientists and farmers were announced. Out of these prestigious national awards “Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay Krishi Antodaya Puraskar” had been given to four nos. of farmers of the country. Sri Devajit Changmai, a small farmer from Sripani Mathadang village of Dhemaji district has been able to bag this award. Sri Changmai under the guidance of KVK, Dhemaji has produced Certified Paddy seeds since 5 years and contributed towards the enhancement of productivity of Paddy in the district.
Shri Changamai has also produced 120 to 150q of certified seeds of submergent tolerant varieties Bahadur Sub-1 and Ranjit Sub-1 which are promising varieties in flood affected district like Dhemaji. In his backyard area of only 0.22 ha, he has adopted for horticulture-fishery-poultry Integrated Farming System from where he could able to earn about 1.5 lakhs annually.
After getting the guidance from KVK Dhemaji, he started a small nursery unit producing seedlings of assam lemon, betelvine, black pepper, coconut, papaya and vegetables and cultivating off season vegetables in low-cost polyhouse. A small farm unit “Bishnujyoti Krishi Farm” established by Changmai served as an agriculture information centre for fellow farmers, college students and agri-prenuers. Being a small farmer Shri Changmai is successful in upliftment of livelihood along with contribution towards the development of the agriculture sector in the district.
