Achievements
  • A. Awarded IARI Senior Fellowship during Ph. D. programme at IARI, New Delhi for the period 1994-1997. B. Awarded Fellow of Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding and Fellow of Indian Society of Agricultural Biochemists. C. Successfully guided 1 Ph. D. student and 10 M. Sc. (Agri) students at AAU. D. Co-authored three practical manuals in PBG courses of UG at AAU. E. (a) A number of maize entries were evaluated in AICRP on Maize during both kharif and rabi seasons during 2001 -2012. A number of hybrids and composites were found promising for rabi season in Assam. Few most notable among them were: Vivek hybrid 9, Vivek QPM 9, Shaktiman-3, Shaktiman-4, HQPM-1, Vivek Maize Hybrid 47, Vivek Maize Hybrid 53 and Bio 9544. Three hybrids namely, Vivek Maize Hybrid 47, Vivek Maize Hybrid 53 and Bio 9544, tested at AICRP on Maize were later recommended from AAU for cultivation for the lower Brahmaputra valley zone of Assam, (b) around two hundred frontline demonstrations were conducted in different districts of Assam during 2001-2009 with recommended maize composites and hybrids under AICRP on Maize, Jorhat; and (c) five state-level training programmes on “Improved Production Technology in Maize” were conducted during 2001-2012 at Jorhat, Gossaigaon, Kokrajhar and Bongaigaon. F. The following mutants were confirmed in M3 in the project entitled “Breeding for higher productivity of indigenous joha rice of Assam through induced mutations for morpho-agronomic traits" : (a) 12 promising photoperiod insensitive mutant of cultivar Kon Joha, (b) 72 mutants of Kon Joha with the traits short stature, earliness in maturity, higher tillering, pigmented kernels and clustering in kernels; (c) three male-sterile mutants; and (d) Technical Committee Meeting of Crop Improvement Group allowed for MLT of four high yielding Kon Joha mutants. G. Out of fifteen hybrids generated during rabi 2008 in the institutional project entitled “Development of brinjal hybrids for rabi season in Assam”, two hybrids viz., Arka Nidhi x Pusa Upkar and Pusa Kranti x Pusa Upkar were high yielders. They exhibited high heterosis over both MP and BP for the traits viz., fruit yield per plant, plant height, fruit weight, leaf area and NAR. The cross Pusa Kranti x Pusa Upkar was early exhibiting a high negative heterosis for days to 50% flowering and days to 50% fruiting. H. Published more than 20 publications.
